John 21: Come & Follow Me

In John's final chapter, we witness a profound encounter between the risen Jesus and His disciples who had returned to fishing. After an unsuccessful night of casting nets, Jesus appeared on the shore and instructed them to try the right side of their boat. Their obedience resulted in a miraculous catch of 153 fish, illustrating the fundamental truth that apart from Christ, our efforts yield nothing of eternal value.

This scene sets the stage for Peter's restoration. Having denied Jesus three times during the crucifixion, Peter now received three opportunities to declare his love and receive his commission to shepherd God's people. Jesus transformed Peter's failure into purpose, demonstrating that our past mistakes don't disqualify us from God's calling. The conversation reveals that following Christ requires daily death to self and taking up our cross, as Jesus explained in Luke 9:23.

The message emphasizes that true discipleship goes beyond salvation to encompass daily obedience and trust in God's leading, even when His call exceeds our natural capacity. Jesus warned against comparison with others' journeys, reminding us that each person's path of following Him is unique. Like Jesus who endured the cross for the joy set before Him, we're called to embrace the cost of discipleship while trusting in the Holy Spirit's power to accomplish what we cannot do in our own strength.
